Summer DIYS
Ah yes, summer DIYS. When you have the time to fail at crafting and seriously question your fine motor skills. Whether it's *trying* to Ikea hack something, or make a simple bath bomb, something always goes wrong. ALWAYS. Today I tried to make two things from Pinterest that were listed under DIYS. How'd it go? Well, not amazing....
First, I attempted homemade lip balm. The instructions told me to melt some petroleum jelly, then mix in some olive oil, sugar, and melted pigment (old lipstick). I mixed them all until they were one liquid, just the instructions explained. Then, it said to pour into container and wait a few hours until the balm was dry. What could go wrong? Oh...SO MUCH.
After spilling half of the liquid in the sink and spending almost half an hour scrubbing the petroleum jelly off so it wouldn't stain, I knocked over the jar, which left the lip balm to spill everywhere, where it immediately dried on the counter for me to scrape off with my finger nails. After it dried, I put some on my lips, only for it to stain my lips. Yes, it's supposed to do that...but not for 2 days! Finally, I got it off with a whopping amount of mascara remover (which tasted horrible). Not to mention the mess of splattered petroleum jelly all over the inside of the microwave.
Next, I attempted some homemade play dough. I brought up the recipe, thinking that I wouldn't have to read it. Boy was I wrong! I mixed cornstarch, baking powder, water, tea tree oil, and blue food dye in a large bowl. For an some reason, it was watery. I decided maybe it would help to look up the recipe, and noticed you had to COOK it. Whoops. I tossed the mix into a sauce pan and cooked it for 10 minutes. It turned out...fine. However, I should have thought that *maybe* essential oil would make residue stick to the pan. After cleaning the pan out FOREVER, I noticed that the play dough was expelling an overwhelming amount of moisture.
So now I have some sticky lip balm and wet play dough. I hope your DIYs are better than mine. WAY better. Well, at least my play dough didn't explode...
